If you've come from my Substack you've already read this first part, feel free to scroll down and see the photos instead.
My first gig photography was at the Railway, its the place we hung out at as teens, it was somewhere my parents went when they were younger and it’s where my (now adult) kids go to see gigs locally. So it seemed somehow appropriate that it would be at the Railway that I had my first real go at photographing gigs. The gig was Charlie Smith’s acoustic night, and he was in need of a photographer, I was already there with my camera and so, after prompting from the lovely D’Kenzion (also a musician), he asked for me to help out in return for tickets to see the show. I took him up on it (with fair warning that I hadn’t done it before) as it was something I wanted to try and it felt a little like fate (I am a tiny bit superstitious but only about weird things lol).
At the end of May I was invited to come see Charlie play again, this time I was not asked to bring my camera, it was just a thank you for the photos I took, that you can see in an earlier blog post. I did, however, bring my camera, because I can’t leave it alone lol. So here is one of the performers of the night, this is Joshua Chinappen, he’s incredibly talented and his expressiveness made for some great images.
Here is the full set of mono images.
