The Evolution of Alternatives. I’ve talked previously about how the term alternative started out generalised, became and label and has now, in my opinion, stepped back into a more umbrella term for those who don’t fit mainstream societies idea of the norm.
On April 2nd 2023 I met up with a small number of people who have lived and grown through the 90s and early 2000s, when it was heavily used, at least in the UK as a label, a way to identify. They’ve grown, and changed, but at heart still feel they have never lost that aspect of themselves that was outside of the norm; here they tell a little about themselves, alongside a few images from our session.
Sue Paris
Sue is a ‘young’ 50 year old, mother to 3 kids, divorced, living with partner and her pet rats. Working in a traditional law firm and enjoying her ‘second’ childhood. Sue Paris

In terms of alternative culture, I do enjoy gaming, both tabletop and live action with costuming. I also keep a pack of rats which are unconventional pets. Music wise I do like Nordic rock these days, tastes change over the years. Paul Holroyd.

Stuart, sometimes known as Badger, is a gamer of several types, previously he was involved in live action roleplay, these days it’s more tabletop and wargaming (such as Warhammer), he’s also a PC gamer. He reads avidly, historical drama, urban fantasy (Dresden Files), manga, light novels etc, has an epic board game collection and listens to music that ranges country, to metal, Nordic rock, Pop, punk, Jazz, folk and many other things besides.
